Of course it would have a Scorpio ascendant. How else could a story built on secrets, obsession, and the undead find its footing? When ABC’s gothic soap opera Dark Shadows premiered on June 27, 1966, at 4:00 PM in New York City, Scorpio was rising. The atmosphere was immediate: secrecy, obsession, hidden family histories, and the supernatural. Yet the series didn’t launch as the supernatural phenomenon we remember. In its first year, it was a slow, moody story about an orphaned governess walking

    Informational Outlaws (opens the original)

In seventeenth-century England, control meant weaponizing language. The Royal College of Physicians kept the public sick and pliant by printing medical texts strictly in Latin. Nicholas Culpeper wasn’t having it. He committed linguistic piracy by translating the Pharmacopoeia Londinensis into plain English. He followed this up by publishing his Complete Herbal. In doing so, he bypassed the medical elites entirely by putting a functional pharmacy directly into the hands of ordinary households in

The screen door rattles against its frame as I push it open, stepping out from the dim, cool hollow of the hallway straight into the glare. The heat hits me like an open oven door, flat and thick. The air smells of sun-baked dust and fresh-mowed grass from the yard across the street.A man in a s

The Psychology & Astrology of “True-Crime Fandom” and Evidence Rejection (opens the original)

    Excerpt

    Read excerpt

Not so long ago, I wrote about the Delphi Murders. The Psychic Sleuth shared my Delphi articles and I ended up with new followers and a few subscribers who are interested in True Crime. I stopped following True Crime after the Delphi case went to trial and Richard Allen was found guilty. Lots of YouTubers kept it alive, however. This past week I got wind of the Lindsay Clancy trial, and I was genuinely stunned to find a dedicated contingent of followers who insist she didn’t actually

On the Blog This Week: Evolutionary Astrology (opens the original)

    Excerpt · Positive tone

As many of you already know, I started posting the bulk of my new writing on Bear Blog. The reason for this is because I am writing a lot. I do not want a folder full of drafts. I find that if I post too frequently on Substack, I lose subscribers. I tried posting without sending emails and those posts sit there with very few views. I tried promoting some posts with notes. Stats show that my notes generally get around seven impressions. So, I decided to publish on Bear Blog to my hearts content.
