“The Wargame” on Sky - A Short Reflection (opens the original)

    Excerpt

    Read excerpt

I believe that Ronald Reagan once asked what would happen if “We [The United States] were threatened by an outer power from outer space. Wouldn’t we then find we didn’t have any differences between us at all?”I’m not sure what made me think of that, after I finished watching Sky’s “The War Game”. I guess it’s because I am holding on to hope that events would play out somewhat differently from the chilling scenario played out in TWG. That is to say, the United States would come to Britain’s aid.

Playing Politics with “Downing Draft” - Part 4 (opens the original)

    Excerpt

    Read excerpt

I’m now fully into this parliamentary term. And since I pressed send on my 3rd piece, I’ve had a little bit of time to reflect. And if there’s one thing I’ve found genuinely useful, it’s that I think I’ve learned a thing or two about decision-making. I am risk-averse. I’m wary about spending political capital, knowing that when it’s gone, it’s gone. There’s a bit of “computer says no” about that in the game - unless there are ways to increase these limits I’m not aware of. (I’m kind of learning

What Do These Politicians Expect Me to Do?I know that I’ve done a lot of writing (some might say moaning) in recent days about the rhetoric, particularly from the Conservative Party, around the UK’s welfare benefits system. When we say “benefits”, I mean social security, and that’s how I will try to refer to it from here on in. The term “benefits” has such a stigma on it right now - as does “welfare”. I am feeling it more and more as time goes on.But in the las

"Don't Spend Your Benefits on Alcohol." They Really Went There? (opens the original)

    Excerpt · Critical tone

    Read excerpt

“Ban claimants spending their benefits on alcohol”They’re going there. They’re really going there.I mean… it’s all very well talking about the “ballooning” welfare bill. It’s all very well when you restrict it to economics - numbers that are increasing and increasing, which becomes a problem to solve.I wonder where the lines draw between political football and creating a good welfare system that provides a safety net and actually does help people who want to work. What is the latest bright idea?

If you’ve made it through the first two editions of this series. Can I say thank you so very much? :)I’m not completely joking. When I came up with this idea, it seemed like such a good one. I just hope I’m doing the idea justice. I think I explained some of that in the first 2 parts. If you feel like you want to catch up with them, here are the first 2 parts.“Playing Politics with Downing Draft”Part 1: - https://jonniegrieve.substack.com/p/playing-p
