    This summer has offered a new path towards the intersection of my roles as a land steward and public historian in AfroCarolina. In June I took on a summer job, leading youth conservation crews in Durham, clearing invasive plants and doing beautification work in Hayti, a historic neighborhood that was built by freedmen in the aftermath of the Civil War but was later displaced in the 60’s when a freeway was built right in the heart of the community.
