The Labour government’s ambitions to strengthen vocational education and training (VET) in England are important and wise. Building a serious, popular skills route is a good idea. Economists may point out that demand for, and returns to, university education remain strong, but other countries have shown that a robust VET sector can also deliver secure, well-paying jobs. Switzerland, Austria and Germany all send large shares of teenagers into vocational tracks that lead reliably into skilled work
