Riefenstahl. (opens the original)
Read excerpt
I finished watching the 2024 documentary Riefenstahl last night. It took 4 sittings; there was only so much I could deal with in one go. It was fascinating and mortifying at the same time. The fascination came from seeing her immaculate and extensive archives, having a record of a life - ‘that’ life- laid out in such meticulous detail is absorbing and enthralling. The bonus being that so much of her life is recorded on film and audio - that you can almost live through it with her. I haven’t felt
Elizabeth Holmes’s cold, dead eyes (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Like everyone else, I’ve seen the Elizabeth Holmes trailer. And like everyone else, my blood ran cold. Not just because I was genuinely unnerved and disturbed - but because I’ve met A LOT of people like her.Of course, it’s a very carefully edited and crafted clip that could indeed be totally misleading. The zoom in and out - cameras there in their faces, cameras nowhere to be seen - the artificial staging and the weird, scary positioning of both figures - and that gurgling baby at the far edge o
The sheer hell of book fairs (opens the original)
Read excerpt
I had a stall at a local book fair yesterday - it’s the third year I’ve worked this event, and it was by far the least successful - for lots of reasons. To make it worse, there is a rooftop bar above the building we were using, and I had a lar
The Tower / La Tour (2022) (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Now and then, an oddity comes along that catches my attention. The Tower / La Tour (2022) (formerly Lockdown Tower - a terrible title that someone should have been locked up for suggesting) isn’t the most original concept - chunks of the Swedish space opera - Aniara, British plague thriller Containment, The Raid, Dredd, The Horde, Rec, huge chunks of Ben Wheatley’s High Rise, The Vanishing on 7th Street, Shivers, and even some of the VERY dark smatterings of Snowpiercer make an appearance.<a cla
My acute anxiety dream came true in real time. (opens the original)
Read excerpt
There is a scene in ‘The Substance” where Margaret Qualley’s character (Sue) stands in the washroom mirror, about to go on stage for the biggest, most important night of her life, and her teeth start to fall out - filling the sink with blood as she loses what self control she had left - as she attempts to leave, the studio boss (an abomination played by Dennis Quaid) introduces her to a gang of sponsors and investors and demands she smile for them. ‘Pretty Girls should ALWAYS smile” - Sue just a
